When it comes to design, Italy is undeniably
one of the world capitals. ‘Made in Italy’ is a brand
unequalled anywhere around the globe. Whether it be kitchens, shoes,
cars or clothes, the perception is that if it’s made in Italy
it will be cutting-edge and of premium quality.
That’s why, for those serious about studying design, Italy
is the optimum choice. For a New Zealander it also means a complete
life experience, living in another culture, learning the language,
gaining international exposure and contacts - and ultimately work
experience.

Istituto Europeo di Design (IED)
Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) has a world-class reputation for
training some of the most talented within the field of design. Founded
in 1966, the institute has always believed the philosophies of “knowing”
and “knowing-how to” must mature and grow together.
As a result, a “project culture” has developed - and
a learning system in which students are taught by professionals
from within the design world.
In their final projects for example, students co-operate with some
of the world’s leading design companies such as Adidas, Ralph
Lauren, Maserati, Kodak, Microsoft and Red Bull. Initiatives such
as these ensure IED students graduate with up-to-the minute knowledge
of what is required to become successful international design professionals
in today’s design workplace.
Creativity is the key to being a successful designer but it must
be supported by practical skills and the ability to create something
of use in the real world. A designer must also be able to promote
their ideas to their client and thus IED focuses on training creative
design individuals who are employable.
IED graduates have gone on to roles in some of the world’s
leading design companies such as Valentino, Versace, Red Bull and
Ferrari to name a few. With its reputation for excellence it is
little wonder that international dignitaries often visit the institute
when in Italy. Visitors have included the Queen of England and the
Prime Minister of New Zealand, Helen Clark.
For those who aspire to a career in design, there is no better,
more inspiring training ground than Istituto Europeo di Design.
An international network with campuses in Milan, Rome, Turin, Venice,
Madrid, Barcelona and Sao Paolo, IED offers a range of courses in
English and the local language.
Courses
(Language of instruction: English)
Three Year Undergraduate Courses
These courses are designed for high school graduates who are interested
in becoming design professionals.
Interior Design (Milan, Barcelona)
Interior designers design indoor spaces. This could mean anything
from residential homes, shops and banks, to hotels, trade fair stands
and museum exhibition areas. They are, by nature, creative, imaginative
and artistic people. They also need to be disciplined, organised
and skilled in the area of business. Interior designers often tend
to be self-employed, work in a design studio or an architectural
firm.
Industrial Design (Milan)
Industrial designers design manufactured products, from watches
to mobile phones, pieces of furniture to lamps, scooters to ski
boots. Industrial design links knowledge about technology and the
visual arts with knowledge about people. Common career paths include
working in an engineering, architectural or design firm or as a
consultant. Many industrial designers become manufacturers of a
variety of products.
Furniture Design (Rome)
Furniture designers create furniture for either mass or limited
production, or create custom or "art furniture”. Mass-produced
furniture can include modular units, office furniture and residential
furniture often used to supply chain stores and corporations. Custom
furniture is often designed and produced for individual residences,
museums, specialty stores and other businesses that have specific
needs. Careers can include furniture designer/fabricator, accessories
designer or fixture designer.
Garden and Landscape Design (Rome)
Professionals trained in this discipline are concerned with garden
and landscape design for various environments such as residential,
neighbourhood and public areas, open spaces and green sites. Garden
and landscape designers can be involved in everything from urban
furniture for open and public spaces to services and projects focusing
on suburban landscapes and communication systems.
Transportation: Car Design (Turin)
The aim of this course is to train professionals who are not only
able to design transportation systems, accessories and vehicles,
but who also understand the psychological and emotional mechanisms
that trigger consumer actions. Here in Turin, students have access
to some of the world’s top car designers. Not only that, but
IED is the only car design school in the world to exhibit at the
world-famous Geneva Auto Show. The car industry is very international
in outlook and as a result designers often go on to work in a number
of different countries during their careers.
Fashion Design (Barcelona)
Fashion and Textile Design (Milan)
Fashion designers are professionals who must be capable of blending
technique and creativity. They need the skills to design fashion
collections and accessories as well as the ability to utilise new
technologies and materials. Fashion designers must be ahead of the
latest trends. But more than that, they must be able to negotiate
and communicate with a wide range of people, from pattern makers
and tailors to photographers, journalists and fashion show organisers.
Fashion Stylist (Milan)
A fashion stylist is considered to be one of the major fashion creators.
They capture trends, choose outfits for fashion shows and presentations
and decide fashion themes for editorial photo shoots. The stylist
is the link between fashion brands and the readers of fashion magazines.
They work closely with photographers, giving them ideas and information
about the clothes. IED’s Fashion Stylist course aims to give
a cultural and theoretical background to the industry and particular
attention is given to the visual culture and history of fashion
photography.
Fashion Marketing and Communication (Barcelona)
This course looks at the management of all communication and marketing
activities related to fashion products. This includes everything
from analysing the costs of raw materials, to making distribution
choices and developing relationships and communication within the
industry as a whole. After completion of this course career paths
may include product managers and communication managers. Product
managers anticipate trends and ascertain market acceptance. They
are responsible for following the evolution of a product, from its
birth to the realisation of a collection and its distribution to
sales outlets. Communication managers tackle relationships with
everyone from specialised professionals within the fashion industry
to the final consumers.
Graphic Design (Milan)
The work of a Graphic Designer can be quite varied. They may design
the visual image identity of a company or product through creating
artwork such as logos, advertising or posters. They may also be
employed for roles such as creating packaging and devising graphics
used in the supports for online and offline corporate communications.
Animation (Milan)
The mass use of computers has led to a solid expansion of the animation
industry. Animators create characters or moving images for film,
television or the internet – they are artists who must be
able to use a pencil as competently as they can use a computer.
At the end of this course students must complete a thesis which
involves the making of an audio visual production.
Advertising Design (Barcelona)
If you’ve ever dreamed of writing and creating clever ad copy,
planning a media campaign or selling advertising space, this is
the course for you. IED’s Advertising Design course is an
introduction to both the theory and practice of advertising. It
looks at how advertising is done, who does it and what principles
and practices make it effective. Students will become familiar with
the consumer audience, account planning, research and strategy as
well as integrated elements of marketing and communication such
as promotions, public relations and international advertising.
